Unstoppable

by Sandy Haney

In Judges 5:31b, Deborah sings, “Let those who love God be like the sun when it comes out in full strength.”

More times than I care to admit, I’ve thought the moral of this Bible story was that when a man is too cowardly to fight, God will give the victory to a woman. I completely missed the point.

The Israelites, who had done evil before God, were sold to Canaan, and suffered under the harsh oppression of Sisera, the army commander. With the stark reality of the vastness of the Canaanite army and its harsh oppression, the Israelites cried out to the Lord. They went to Deborah, their judge and prophet. She called for Barak, their army commander, and told him God would let them defeat the Canaanite army. Doubt and fear got the better of Barak, who agreed to lead the Israelites against the Canaanites only if Deborah would accompany him. Deborah accepted his terms with the understanding that it would not be Barak who would kill Sisera but a woman. Thus, Jael, the wife of Sisera’s ally, gave the Canaanite commander refuge, only to end up killing him while he slept.

The Israelites defeated the Canaanites that day because they humbled themselves, cried out to the Lord, and their prophesying judge dared to believe God would keep His promise. Deborah knew that when we love God and take Him at His word, we are as unstoppable as the sun when it shines at full strength.

Where You Belong

I know you feel like you’re teetering on the edge of the abyss. That isn’t where you belong. The abyss is reserved for the prince of this world, not for the prince of the world to come. You are meant for the world to come. It’s time to take off the crushing load you’ve had strapped to your back for far too long. Lay it at the foot of the cross. Collapse into the arms of grace. Bask in the warmth of His smile. That’s where you belong.
